Environmental Testing

Environmental Testing Chamber
Environmental Testing Chamber
Environmental testing, often called Environmental Stress Screening (ESS), is the process of exposing the test component to a high and/or low temperature profile for a given period of time. Temperature shock treatment (i.e. high, low, high, low) is a variation in time-based temperature testing.

Other test parameters that are often introduced with varying temperature are humidity and vibration. We have a wide variety of environmental chambers available. Click on this link to view a list of chambers and capabilities.

Temperature Testing
Environmental temperature testing will expose the unit under test to constant high or low temperatures or cycle temperature during testing.

Capabilities / Equipment:
Environmental test chambers are available in sizes from 8 ft3 to 4000 ft3. Also available is a 12,000 ft3 drive in chamber.

Temperature ranges for testing are available from -73°C (-100°F) to 200°C (390°F).

Frequently Used Specifications:

  • MIL STD 883; Steady State Life/Stabilization Bake/Cyclic Temperature A2LA Accredited
  • MIL STD 202
  • Various SAE Mechanical Shock/Mechanical Vibration (J1211 and J1455) A2LA Accredited
  • Various Bellcore & ASTM
DATASYST performs temperature testing in 25,000 square feet of laboratory space located outside of Milwaukee, Wisconsin and within driving distance for our clients in Chicago, Illinois. We look forward to working with you on your next test program. Contact us today at 800-969-4050 to discuss your test.

Thermal Shock
Thermal shock tests are accomplished in two methods. First, in a single environmental chamber that accommodates two programmed temperatures or through the use of two temperature chambers where the unit under test is shuttled between chambers. Transfer time is minimal, typically less than five seconds.

Capabilities / Equipment:
Environmental chamber sizes are available from 1 ft³ , for a process using a single environmental chamber, to 250 ft³, for a process using the two chamber method.

Temperature ranges are -73°C (-100°F) to 200°C (390°F) with 1 ft³ volume. and -30°C (-22°F) to 50°C (122°F) with large volumes.

Frequently Used Specifications:
MIL STD 810, 202; RTCA/DO-160; Bellcore; Various ASTM; Various SAE

Humidity
Humidity testing can be added concurrently to a temperature test. Cycle rates are dependant on the unit under test, contact DATASYST at 800-969-4050 for specific information.

Capabilities / Equipment:
Chamber sizes available for humidity testing are 8 ft³ , 32 ft³ , 320 ft³ and 4000 ft³ with controlled environments of 5% to 98% RH.

The humidity ramp rates are dependent on chamber size and heat loads.

Frequently Used Specifications:

  • ETSI EN300 019-2-2 v.2.1.2, Air Temperature/RH/Vibration(Sine & Random)A2LA Accredited
  • ETSI EN300 019-2-3 v.2.1.3, Air Temperature/RH/Vibration (Sine& Random)/Shock A2LA Accredited

Various ASTM; Bellcore & Military Standards

Altitude
Altitude testing can be performed in a single phase, used to determine the altitude that a component fails. Cycling pressure levels can also be performed to determine the effects on the unit of changes in pressure over time. Energizing the unit and power cycling during testing can also add stress to the device.

Capabilities / Equipment:
Chamber one, inner dimensions of altitude chamber are 4 ‘ x 5.5’ x 7’ high. The chamber has electrical power inputs and signal and sensor outputs. Range of the chamber is from a –1000 feet to 30,000 feet (20 inches Hg) elevation. Examples of ramp rates are: 0 feet to 15,000 feet (13 inches Hg) 1.75 minutes and 15,000 feet to 30,000 feet (20 inches HgV) in 3.5 minutes.

Chamber two, inner dimensions of the altitude chamber are 12” x12” x 18” deep the chamber has a range of 5 inches Hg PR to 27 inches Hg V , Temperature testing can be done concurrently to 200°C.

Frequently Used Specifications:

Various Military Standards

HALT / HASS Testing
Highly Accelerated Life Testing (HALT) and Highly Accelerated Stress Screening (HASS) utilizes both vibration and environmental conditions to place the unit under test in severe environmental conditions that can quickly identify the unit weaknesses.

Capabilities / Equipment:
HALT and HASS testing combines the environmental testing capabilities described in the sections labeled Temperature, Thermal Shock, Humidity, and Vibration to produce a more extreme environment for the unit under test.

Frequently Used Specifications:
The test specifications used for HALT / HASS testing vary and are dependant on the needs of our clients, please call us at 800-969-4050 to discuss your specific testing requirements.
