An excessive amount of stress within a product can lead to premature failures at a given location.
Finite Element Analysis (FEA), brittle coating or empirical information is used to determine relatively high strain areas. Strain gages are then applied to quantify strain at these locations.
Several factors contribute to the correct selection of a strain gage including the component material, such as steel, aluminum, etc.; type of strain to be measured, such as tensile or shear; the gage environment; and the type of gage, such as three leg or rosette. Static and dynamic loads are then applied to the component to measure the strain.
